Arteta Earns Vital Win for Arsenal; Player Ratings

We deserved the win and for a long time it looked like we’d punish ourselves but Mikel Arteta’s long range beauty earned us a vital victory. Straight to the ratings then, where we’ve incorporated the highlights of the match that saw Balotelli get sent off.

Szczesny – 8
Had relatively little to do but was much assured in goal, tipping over a goal bound header and rushing out to clear when Balotelli was through on goal, the latter proving most crucial. Solid game.

Sagna – 7
Impressive defensive display from the Frenchman, handled Balotelli whenever the Italian ventured down our right side.

Vermaelen – 7.5
Very solid defending from the Verminator, making interceptions and going forward with the ball at times. Unfortunate to have kept out Robin van Persie’s goal bound header in the first half.

Koscielny – 7
Good game from the Frenchman too.

Gibbs – 4
Uncharacteristically poor today, didn’t impose himself and his substitution was inevitable.

Song – 6
Good game. Saw one of his trademark lobs to van Persie end up bouncing away from Man. City’s post. It did seem then we were destined to somehow not win this.

Arteta – 7.5
Cracking long range goal from the Spaniard when someone needed to take the bull by the horn. It was that or we’d rue all our missed chances.

Rosicky – 6
I feel he didn’t pull the strings as well as we know he could. He did get better as the game wore on.

Benayoun – 6
Great work rate shown by the Israeli, compensating for a somewhat flat performance.

Walcott – 3
The Theo we hate to see came out today. Clueless for 80 minutes though could have got a goal in the frenzied moment his shot came off the post (only for Vermaelen to miscue the rebound and Beayoun see his effort somehow cleared off the line by Lescott.)

Van Persie – 7
No goals in four games now though he had one (rightly) ruled out for offside and his two headers denied by Vermaelen and the post. He scores when he wants, do score soon enough RvP.

Santos – 6
Imposed his presence soon as he came on and added some bite to our attack.

Ramsey – 3
He could have squared to RvP in stoppage time but decided to try curl it in, wrong move.

Ox-Chamberlain – N/A

Most importantly, we’ve got the much needed win and put ourselves back in third on 61 points, two ahead of the sillywhites and five of Chelski and Newcastle United. For City, we’ve in essence ended their title hopes; you’re welcome Old Trafford.

Poor Outing Ends Winning Streak: The Player Ratings

Szczesny (6) – Respectable showing. Did his part. Nothing he could have done to prevent either goal.

Koscielny (5) – Average performance, reads the game well. Busy day, got bullied atimes.

Vermaelen (3) – Terrible showing. Was at fault for both goals. He’ll want to forget this one very quickly.

Sagna (5) – One cannot really complain. Did his job well.

Gibbs (5) – Decent outing.

Arteta (5) – Lacked the inspiration to move us forward. Needs to be more adventurous.

Song (4) – Poor game. That chipped effort doesn’t work out every time. He needs to keep it simple atimes.

Rosicky (5) – He was shifted to the left to accommodate Ramsey. He did not do anything worthwhile.

Walcott (6) – Good goal, did well against Taiwo. Inconsistent game though, sometimes went missing.

Ramsey (4) – Justified the fans’ complaints about him starting. Terrible performance.

Van Persie (4) – He has had better days surely. He missed a great chance as his goal drought continues.

Chamakh (2) – As Piers said “if the answer is Chamakh, the question should be changed.”

Gervinho (3) – Like Norwich away, this is the kind of game he should have started.

Oxlade Chamberlain (N/A)

Wenger (1) Terrible selection today. Ramsey adds nothing to the team at the moment, why start him? Why wait till the 70th minute to make a change when all is clearly not well?

In all it was a poor performance. QPR looked like they needed the win more. A lot of players were mere passengers today.

Let’s hope it’s nothing but an “off day”.

Verminator delivers 3 points: The Player Ratings

Szczesny (6) -Had little to do all game. Beaten at his near post for the goal.

Koscielny/Vermaelen (8.5) -Amazing shift. Gave the Newcastle players no chance in the box. Vermaelen got the winner. Dramatic stuff.

Sagna (8) – Was full of running. Stood up to Gutierrez and helped in attack when he could.

Gibbs (6.5) – Could have done better with his tackling for Ben Arfa’s goal. Was impressive going forward. Decent game.

Arteta (7) – Back from injury and slotted in nicely. Gave a few balls away and he should have been a bit more adventurous with his passes.

Song (7) – Good game, kept moving the ball around. Didn’t get an assist today.

Rosicky (7.5) – Picked up from where he left off in the previous game. No goal this time though. Was at the middle of everything we did while he lasted.

Walcott (9) – 2 assists when we needed them the most. Was a menace throughout. Great game. Do this more often, Theo. My Man Of Match.

The Ox (6.5) – Quiet performance, not by any means poor though. It just didn’t happen for him today.

Van Persie (8) – Another top performance. Replied Ben Arfa’s opener in stunning fashion. Kept taunting the opposition defence and keeper all game. Seeing him shout “Come On” after the winner was a joy!

Gervinho (4) – Did nothing of note. He needs to get his head right.

Ramsey (6.5) – Came in and brought a new dimension to the game. Was full of running. Could have got an assist.

There you have it gooners! Our winning run continues. Just one point behind the Spuds now with 10 games to go.

Jermain Defoe should get his cheque book ready as he’ll be doing philanthropic work all summer.

RVP & Szczesny Steal Win for Us + Player Ratings

Yet again we come from behind to snatch all three points, this time at Carling Cup holders Liverpool in a match we failed to get a bearing for long periods as well as finish without winning even a corner kick.

Liverpool were industrious and a bit over the top with their challenges for the ball, one of which has cost us Arteta who was stretched off concussed. Hopefully he’ll be out too briefly.

In summary, Laurent Koscielny gave Liverpool the lead with a flying side footed own goal *smh* minutes after Szczesny saved Dirk Kuyt’s penalty off a non-existent foul.

Captain vantastic equalised with his first headed goal of the campaign off a sterling Sagna cross. And when it seemed we’ll gift the lone walkers the match, Song comes out of an appaling phase with a neat chip over the defence for Robin who lashed home with that left foot!

Unless Chelsea wins by a two-goal margin or more we stay in fourth place, and now we’re just four points off the neighbours who host the Red Devils tomorrow.

For now… the player ratings…

Szczesny – 8
Charismatic goalkeepers of old will be proud of this young man here. Saved penalty, and the rebound too. Made the 18 yard his own and really deserved a clean sheet though Kozzer had his ideas.

Sagna – 7
Wonderful cross to find RvP for the first. Still needs to work on tracking back though that is coupled with the winger ahead of him not helping out.

Gibbs – 7
I feel he had a good game. Got some neat tackles in, wasn’t so adventuruous yet went about his duties well enough.

Koscielny & Vermaelen – 6
Poor goal to own and had some trouble dealing with Suarez at times, Vermaelen too. Vermaelen on his part improved in the second half but both need to do much better in coming matches.

Arteta – 6
Quiet game overall before getting knocked out by that ******* ****** Henderson. Any guesses what words have been censored off, be my guest!

Song – 6.5
Error ridden game for this man until the ‘otu’ (poor footballer) makes way for the Song we’ve come to love this season and create a fantastic stoppage time assist for the captain who in return kissed the man’s boot. Vintage stuff.

Rosicky – 5
Not the best of days for little Mozart but he wasn’t poor.

Benayoun – 4
Yossi must’ve got in the Sp*rs bus that left the Ems after that win because the man wasn’t at Anfield today.

Walcott – 6
Lively when called upon though his finishing today lacked precision and confidence behind them.

RvP – 9
This man here, hardworking and all. Very well taken goals both at the tail end of both halves. He’s the sort of character that should be leading and here’s me hoping he will be next season along with a few new and assured names in. Surely, he’ll account for half or more of the league’s goals of the season…

Diaby – 5
Cursed. Just cursed Vassiriki. Came on for Arteta and got replaced under half an hour after. He did play well in his cameo, even brought a save out of Reina.

Ox – 6
He better start against Milan, we’ve got nothing to lose that day so I don’t see why he shouldn’t. Too much energy oozing off this lad, well worth every pound of the Queen’s currency.

Gervais Headband – 5
Still seeking confidence from his penalty miss at AFCON Wenger? Oh well, we’ve been alright so far with him coming from he bench lately. He too should start against Milan.

Consecutive wins against tough oppositions is something to be very proud of. This win pleases me more so as we won ‘dirty’ as have been demanded time and again in the past. More of the same Gunners!

Walcott Stars As Arsenal Destroy Spurs : The Player Ratings.

I’m way way too excited to give a brief preview. Wenger spun a surprise by starting Rosicky & Benayoun together and dropping Gervinho & Oxlade Chamberlain. Little did we know Wenger had dreamt this game up the night before. 5 goals after falling 2 goals behind. Below are the player ratings.

Something needs to be done about Szczesny. A personal coach maybe, nothing he could have done about the first goal, but the 2nd goal, despite it being a foul, he should have come out for that ball.

Koscielny 6
Was in 6’s and 7’s with Vermaelen in the opening half but grew in confidence as the game wore on.

Vermaelen 6
His partnership with Kozzer is dwindling, we keep conceding goals, but he did ok and was rarely troubled in the second 45.

Should get a lower rating for going missing for all of Spurs attacks in the first half but he started the comeback with a brilliant header.

I will get slack for this but I thought he was our best defender, for someone just coming back he did well, yes he lost the ball that led to the first goal but he was always the last defender at the back. Nothing he could have done against Bale for the penalty.

Arteta, Rosicky & Benayoun were all brilliant & excellent today. Not the most talented of players but their industry & hardworking play saw us through this game.

Very sloppy in the first half, and did little defending but his mazy run started the second goal & his lovely over the top assist for Theo was glorious.

Wasn’t directly responsible for any of the goals, but my God was he brilliant today, together with Rosicky & Arteta. His defending was top notch. Best display for us so far.

Yes. Yes. I’ll give him 10. Perfect rating. He’s gotten a lot of stick of recent which is well deserved but I had a feeling this would be his day. A lot of twitter folk insulted him & made jokes & wanted him off for Oxlade but I said he must stay on & Wenger must have seen my tweet(yes he’s on twitter & following me too). Two goals was the outcome. Lovely goals I might add. Given a rousing ovation as he went off.

Tomas Rosicky you darling beauty. How I love you. Another much maligned player but of late has been consistent & doing well. Marvelous performance from him & his first goal in two years was a welcome relief.

Van Persie8
Its often rare for RVP to be on the scoresheet & then bag an assist and not be the man of the match. His goal was topdraw and his hold up play was nice.

Great selection for the second PL game running.

Man Of The MatchArteta, Benayoun & Rosicky are my men of the match, they played well today & each contributed in ways that led to goals.

For the 2nd premier league game running, Wenger’s selection paid off, picking passing & team work over pace by dropping Oxlade & Gervinho. Result? 5 goals, the second time we’ve scored 5 this season against a London team. Let’s hear what you have to say in the comments.

Milan Hit Four Past ” Pathetic” Arsenal + Player Ratings

We all saw the game so this is going to be a rather brief post. No one said it was going to be an easy tie, but no one expected the horror show that we the fans were put through by both the coach & the players. Everyone is culpable for what happened to be our heaviest European defeat EVER.

AW tinkered with his formation and put up a five-man midfield to combat the Milan side, a formation we haven’t used in a long time. Even if it was the right formation, it was deployed with the wrong personnel.

Ramsey’s cameo at Sunderland deceived him & thus he handed the Welshman a start in the middle with Rosicky shunted out wide. Then there was Gibbs in for his first game in three months in place of Mertesacker.

Milan before then had damaged both wide areas of the pitch in an effort to fight our speedy wingers, a tactic which worked to perfection as a result of lazy play by our ‘speedy’ winger.

The game was a dull affair and we had no rhythm and no pace, it was like all the players were playing with blindfolds. The first goal was typical, a cross into the box for KP-Boateng which left Vermaelen (his marker) for dead before rifling a magnificent strike into the top corner.

Robinho got himself a brace either side of half time to put the game beyond us on the night;the first of those coming from a Ibrahimovic cross after poor defending from Sagna.

And to cap a nightmarish display, Djourou; on for Koscielny no thanks to a knock, couldn’t resist holding on to the Swede who deservedly dispatched the resultant penalty and put the tie as a whole beyond us. Be kind to yourself and not hope for a miracle at the Ems.

CULPRITS : Szczesny & Vermaelen.

Koscielny 6

Vermaelen 3

Van Persie6

When the final whistle went, I was more than happy, we as fans are used to Arsenal ripping out hearts but at least they would play well or fight to the end, but this was different. A lot of poor individual performances, no cohesion, no heart & drive from the players.

All that made even more disheartening with the fact that the defeat marked Henry’s ‘farewell’ from the Ems. It’s february, the month where we always drop out of every competition every year. How long is this decline going to continue?!

Arsenal Hit Blackburn For Seven : The Player Ratings.

Needing 3points, Arsenal set out aiming to get it emphatically against a Blackburn squad which they average 3 goals against them when at home. Ramsey and Sagna made way for Rosicky & Coquelin in the only changes.

It took all of 2mins for Arsenal to open the scoring as Walcott took a pass from Coquelin and fed RVP who had the easiest of tap ins for his 20th goal of the season. From then on, it rained goals with Van Persie bagging 3 and Walcott providing 3 assists. Below are the player ratings.

Hardly ever busy when we play like this but he should have kept out Pedersen’s freekick even though it was a great strike.

Koscielny 7
Conceded the freekick that led to their equalizer and picked up a booking, other than that, an absolute rock at the back. Went off for Sagna later.

Vermaelen 7
Verminator did his job at the back even though he’s still playing out of position. Ok game.

The german had more offensive work than defensive to do as he wasn’t troubled by Burn’s lone striker. Still awaiting his first goal.

Arsenal’s utility man, started in place of Sagna and had a hand in 2 goals as he assisted van persie’s 3rd. Solid game from him

3 goals against Blackburn alone this season(2 for arsenal 1 for everton), he kept things moving in the middle with Song.

One of the 3 men of the match in this game, no direct assist but his passes were a beauty, he kept things moving and he tackled well. Songinho unleashed

Battling display, effective, passed and defended well, at his age proved to be a better replacement for Ramsey.

Oh my!!! Is this the real Theo Walcott? I guess he wants that new contract bad and on this performance, he might get it, 3 assists this noon and an absolute beast. The 3rd assist was Messi-esque.

I tweeted when the game kicked off that he would get his first league goal and well he did more than that. He got 2. Deservedly. Brilliant kid, attacked like an Ox and defended well. Bright future.

Van Persie10
Amazeballs. Superhuman. Saint Van Persie. Oba(King in Yoruba), legend, Vantastic, Glorious, Beautiful. *stops to catch breath*. Hattrick and 2 assists. That says it all.

Benayoun 5

Henry 6:
Goal off the bench, what more do you want?

Sagna 5

MAN OF THE MATCH : Should be men of the match as there were 3 contenders. Walcott, RVP & Song

Credit must go to Arsene wenger if I must say for dropping Ramsey to the bench. We were beginning to wonder if it would ever happen. I asked for 3 points before the game and the lads duly delivered. Great game. Have your say in the comments section.

Arsenal rue missed chances: The Player Ratings.

Szczesny (6): Not a convincing performance. Looked under pressure with the ball at his feet. Did well to stop Ngog early on, and Davies late on.

Sagna (7): Good comeback, won his fair share of tackles, and almost grabbed an assist. Showed what we were missing at RB.

Mert (6.5): Good game, stood up to pretty much everything thrown at him.

Kos (6): Difficult first half. Struggled to cope with the strength of Ngog. Slightly better 2nd half

Verm (6): Decent shift.

Song (5): Poor game by his standards. Kept losing the ball due to a lack of concentration.

Ramsey (4.5): Clearly overplayed and out of form. Kept trying but it just wasn’t happening for him. He needs to rest.

Arteta (7): Very impressive game. Kept things ticking in the middle.

Walcott (5): Missed a great chance in the first half. Squandered another good chance late on. He should be scoring those. Did not do enough to impress me. I wonder why Arsene keeps him on for 90mins.

Oxo (6): Good performance, looked to do something special each time he had the ball. Lasted 66 minutes.

RVP (7.5): He looked fired up for this one from the start. Hit the post twice with amazing efforts. He deserved more.

Henry (5): Came on, didn’t do much.

Rosicky (5): Not enough action.

Another chance to close up on the top 4 squandered. More points dropped. Sad, really.

Arsenal turn it around: A-Villa Player Ratings.

Fabianski (7):Nothing he could have done about either goal. A few scary moments but other than that, he was good.

Coquelin (8):How much we missed him covering for Sagna. Good good player, excellent performance

Mert/Kos (8):Good game, stood tall to everything Villa had to offer.

Verm (7):Not his best game, but he did well. He was caught out of position for the 2nd goal.

Song (7.5):Better performance. Got into the tackles and broke up attacks well.

Ramsey (7.5):Another one who played better than we’ve seen him in the last few games. He was full of running, and was looking to make things happen.

Rosicky (8): Another top performance. He’s been superb in his past few games. Good to see have him back.

Walcott (7):Made good runs, decision making still suspect though. Got a freak goal, his first at the Emirates in a long while.

AOC (7.5):Good game after game, he keeps imposing himself. It will be difficult to keep him out of the starting XI.

RVP (7):25 goals this season and counting. 2 well-taken penalties when it mattered most. Could have got an assist from a corner. He’s also surpassed Bergkamp(120) on the list of Arsenal top scorers.

Arteta (5):Came on for Rosicky and showed what we had missed. Kept things ticking in midfield.

Sagna (N/A):Another one who came back! Good to see him in the red and white again.

Henry (N/A):Less than 5 minutes and he could have got a goal.

There you have it guys! Trailing by 2 goals at half time we managed to overturn the deficit and set up a 5th Round encounter with Sunderland or Boro.

Any thoughts/comments, please drop them below.

Arsenal fall to Man United: The Player Ratings.

Szczesny (7.5) : Made a couple of good saves. Not at fault with the goals.

Djourou (2.5): Wenger rarely makes changes before the 60th minute mark. I guess that says it all.

Mert (6.5): Good game, his lack of pace left him exposed atimes but he more than made up for it with fantastic tackling.

Kos (8.5): Amazing defender he is. Started the attack that led to the goal, after an excellent tackle. Right up there amongst the best CB’s in the world. My MOTM!

Vermaelen (7): Had a tough game against Valencia, but did his bit. Maybe he could have done better for the first goal.

Song (6): Average game, sluggish most times, but won his fair share of tackles.

Ramsey (5): He should not be starting. His form has dipped and it’s so evident. He needs a breather.

Rosicky (8): This game showed us the Rosicky we bought from Dortmund. He was at the heart of every good thing we did. Top top performance.

Ox-Chamberlain (8): What a game he had. Did not have the best of starts, but he grew into the game. He always looked a threat and got a delightful assist. A star in the making for sure.

Walcott (4): Terrible game! Very very poor performance. Did not do one thing right!

RVP (7.5): Not the best of games. Anonymous in the first half due to lack of support from the midfield, miss an almost open goal, but made up for it. It wasn’t enough though.

Yennaris (6.5): Encouraging performance. Should have started ahead of that Swiss pipe!

Arshavin (4): His introduction created a lot of controversy and he didn’t help his case with some terrible positioning and defending for the 2nd goal.

Park (4): Came on for his EPL debut but didn’t have enough time to impress.

Arsene Wenger (*insert lowest score possible*) : This man probably gets a hard-on from annoying fans. Good call to start Ox, but why ruin it by taking him off when he was at his best? He practically handed United a lifeline. And I’m not buying that fatigue story, that’s an insult to our intelligence. Terrible decision!

There you have it guys! Any thoughts? Let us know in the comments!
